WHAT EXACTLY IS MOLD and
Mold is a species of fungus which reproduces itself by means of microscopic spores.
It serves the purpose in nature of causing the decomposition of dead plant matter. It does this by consuming and digesting organic matter, in particular cellulose.
This activity of mold is what prevents an enormous accumulation of dead plants, trees and leaves on our planet.
SO WHY DOES MOLD OCCUR
Cellulose is also found in a wide variety of the building materials used in your home, such as the cardboard in drywall, the wood used to frame the walls and provide finish molding.
Cellulose is also found in many fabrics containing organic material such cotton and carpets, wool and silk.
Mold will feed on the cellulose found in all these sources, and will also feed on dust and any other form of organic matter that is available in your home. When high levels of moisture and humidity are present, countless thousands of mold spores, many of which may have previously been dormant, will begin to reproduce and grow in the form of mold and mildew.
This can happen very rapidly -- even in just a matter of days or hours!
MOLD, MILDEW AND ILLNESS:
Enclosed areas where moisture is present, such as basements, crawl spaces, wall spaces, and attics, offer ideal conditions for the growth of mold, mildew and the proliferation of mold spores that lead to chronic allergies, asthma, even possible lung disease and other illnesses.
The result can be deadly, as in our mold "horror story" shared above, or at least injurious to your health in one degree or another.
You don't ever want to treat this hazard lightly.
Whether you see mold or not, wherever moisture is present, mold and mildew are not far behind, and may already exist in areas of your home where it is not yet visible.
MOLD WILL "EAT" THROUGH YOUR HOME!
Not only does mold present a health hazard, it can do costly damage to your home.
As explained above, mold lives by eating organic material wherever it can be found. That means that when mold takes up residence your home, it is "feasting" on the organic material it finds in the drywalls, in the structure and support beams and so forth.
Left unchecked, the mold will gradually consume and weaken the structure of your home. This is a serious concern.
HOW CAN I PREVENT MOLD
Mold spores are found everywhere on this planet, so it is essentially impossible to eliminate mold spores completely from our homes.
What can be done, though, to effectively prevent mold spores from multiplying and then springing to life in the form of mold and mildew, is to eliminate the single most necessary element to mold growth: moisture.
EAST END WATERPROOFING
East End Waterproofing will begin by doing a thorough inspection of your home to identify areas where mold and mildew may be present, and where conditions may contribute to its growth.
East End Waterproofing will then employ mold and moisture remediation solutions to eliminate any existing mold and mildew, and to prevent a recurrence of this hazard in your home in the future.
